【釋義】

vt.
收養(yǎng); 采用，采取，采納; 正式接受，接受; 批準(zhǔn)
第三人稱單數(shù)： adopts 現(xiàn)在分詞： adopting 過去式： adopted 過去分詞： adopted 形近詞： reopt
1. 收養(yǎng)，領(lǐng)養(yǎng)：
He’s not our natural son; we adopted him when he was three. 他不是我們的親兒子——他3歲時(shí)我們領(lǐng)養(yǎng)的。
2. 采取，采用：
They adopted our methods. 他們采用了我們的辦法。
3. 選定，選舉：
She has been adopted as Labour candidate for York. 她被提名為約克郡的工黨候選人。
4. 正式通過：
The agenda was adopted after some discussion. 經(jīng)過討論，議事日程獲得通過。
【例句】
1、Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the complete withdrawal of troops.
議會(huì)采納了要求全部撤軍的決議。
2、I tried to adopt a curled-up position to avoid damaging my limbs.
我努力保持蜷曲的姿勢(shì)以免四肢受傷。
3、Podulski had joined the U.S. Navy as an aviator, adopting a new country and a new profession.

【用法說明】
1. adopt表示“收養(yǎng)”時(shí)，指法律意義上的正式收養(yǎng)，若指一般的認(rèn)養(yǎng)，則用foster。
2. 漢語(yǔ)中的“養(yǎng)子(女)”說成英語(yǔ)是adopted son (daughter)，但是“養(yǎng)父母”卻是adoptive parents (father, mother)。但若用foster(養(yǎng)育的，收養(yǎng)的)則沒有此區(qū)別，如可說a foster child(養(yǎng)子)，a foster father(養(yǎng)父)。
